Spectral Fires is back with an epic new EP release that showcases the progression and newfound creativity amongst the Melbourne band. The heavy-punk inspired ensemble consists of Jack Jeffree (vocals), brothers Harry and Jack Pratt (guitars) and brothers Lachlan and Daniel Cooper (drums and bass). With their latest releases in 2015, ATTRITION || PROGESSION and Headstrong, it’s amazing to see how the band has become more defined and polished in their unique, melodic hardcore sound.

Wayfarer seems another step closer to the desired sound that they have been searching for: a well-balanced blend of jumpy punk blows that follows a rooted heavy-metal sound with graceful, grunge-ridden tones. It’s easily a fresh, Friday night mosh pit and this is most evident in the opening track, ‘New Resolve’. It sets the scene for the rollercoaster that is this upbeat and all-round goodtime EP. It’s a perfect mixture of classic fast-past punk and the new metal hardcore sound that has settled in the alternative world today.

The track ‘False Step’ definitely brings forward the heavier elements in the EP, displaying the abilities of their full potential. It shows enough heavy and aggressive sounds to please long-time fans, whilst still catering to newer fans with a more upbeat, punky vibe with the screaming vocals. ‘Endure’ also follows through with this sound, sporting a sludgier and dragging hardcore beat that’s bound to please. ‘Tethered & Tied’ would also be grouped in with this heavier side with its slower and quieter creeping through the track before it explodes into something more—the anthem of the EP.

‘Left Behind’ shows off the very passionate and emotional side of this EP. With heartfelt lyrics sung in clean vocals, the melodic track is easy to fall in love with.  It boosts the overall contrast in the sounds and lyrics of the album—it’s sure to be a fan-favourite and it can only be left up to imagination, how breath taking the live adaption will be.

The EP closes with ‘Turnover’—a grand finale that uses all these incredible elements of the melodic hardcore genre with its heavy and emotional pleading. It’s a head-banging sing-a-long that will keep listeners going back for more.

Wayfarer is truly a work of art and is the best representation of the band yet.
