Proponent For Sentience is American band, Allegaeon’s fourth studio album and it’s dense with complex and intelligent music. It features 12 songs that push the creative boundaries and form an intricate concept album.

Allegaeon is: Riley McShane (vocals), Greg Burgess (guitar), Michael Stancel (guitar), Corey Archuleta (bass) and Brandon Park (drums). And these guys really draw in a lot of influences from all over the musical globe. You’ve got classical, progressive, thrash, even Latin American woven with their death metal, and it’s a seamless fusion because they manage to maintain their heaviness at the same time.

The opening track, ‘Proponent For Sentience I – The Conception’ is a beautiful example of Allegaeon’s grandiose and orchestral material twined with furious drums and truly insane guitar riffs. As you delve deeper into the record and hear ‘Proponent For Sentience II – The Algorithm’ again with the marching orchestra and heavenly choir, the realisation of the structure of each song in relation to its placement in the album is astounding.

Vocally, there is variation as the album progresses and Riley’s clean singing is just as impressive as his growls. There’s some heavy lyrical content where Allegaeon explore the fact that in our modern age, the robotics field is moving forward at an alarming rate and it ponders what could happen in the not-so-distant future.

The majority of these songs are able to stand on their own without the need of a vocal hook. ‘Of Mind and Matrix’, ‘Grey Matter Mechanics – Appassonata Ex Machinea’ and ‘Demons Of An Intricate Design’ are stand outs with shredding and drumming that surely drew blood and sweat during their creation. The album draws to a close with ‘Subdivisions’, which is a lighter song—of sorts—with melodic clean vocals and rich strong guitars.

As stated before, this album is dense. Heavy with deathly deep vocals, intricate melodies and song structure; the amount of work put into Proponent For Sentience is astounding.
