Australian rock legends doing what Australian rock legends do well—reviving the classics and making them their own—and that’s exactly what The Screaming Jets did for their eighth studio album, Gotcha Covered. Approaching their 30th anniversary, it makes sense that they’ve paid tribute to all the incredible acts that have in some way influenced their journey to Australian rockstar status.

In what frontman Dave Gleeson deemed the “great Aussie party album,” Gotcha Covered  features covers of legendary Australian artists—legends in their own right that is. Produced by Steve James a long-time collaborator for the band, the album was recorded live at Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne earlier this year. The end result is a tight nostalgic homage to Australian music of the mid-1960s to the 1990s.

Key standouts include album opener ‘Wedding Ring’—originally recorded by the Easybeats in 1965, it fires up the album and dumps the listener head first into the 1960s. You can’t help but give them a nod for their album planning either—the rewards are toward the end with classics like ‘Errol,’ originally by Australian Crawl; ‘Rain’ by Dragon; and ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Damnation’ by none other than AC/DC. And to really finish on a high note, Stevie Wright’s ‘Guitar Band’ is the epic 14-minute finishing track—a marathon version that contains no less than 16 of Australia’s finest guitar players (not including The Screaming Jets’ own Scott Kingman and James Hocking).

Whether you’re a hardcore Australian rock fan or just a nostalgic that plays the classics on repeat, The Screaming Jets’ latest album is for you. The beauty in this rock-offering is the timelessness combined with new-age recording methods, meaning an effortlessly updated party-anthem album that will spend its time on repeat at Australia Day parties.
